Long story (kinda) short. I was told my car needed brake pads before it's next service. It's booked in at my mechanic (the guy who charges HALF the price that my dealer charges) next Wednesday, so I'd have good brakes to go to Maitland. I arranged a bank loan for a few bits and pieces. My pay won't cover the brakes. Bad news.... the bank stuffed up (AGAIN) and I won't have the money in time.
How will I know if the brakes are ok to make it to Maitland or not? My mechanic can't see the pads without crawling under the car, and me, being a techno bimbo has no idea what to look for.

Hey Chequers, It depends on how much of a lead foot you are!! :)
But in saying that, there is a rule of thumb, "If in doubt, sit it out"
This is a common rule amongst motorcyclists and one I follow very seriously. Its up to you naturally but in my opinion, brakes are the most important component on a vehicle, I rate it higher the tyres!! Afterall, its what actually stops you...!!!

RedIce, they actually stop the car nicely. Except when I hit them a bit hard, and get the "thud thud thud" thingy happening.
Nuggetboy, I'm actually quite a conservative driver (Andy, do NOT mention the burnout I did on the way to Lithgow. That was a mistake!). If I knew how much pad was left, I wouldn't be worried. It's not knowing that's got me concerned.
Crikey Silversv8. I can be there! Just let me know what sort of pads I need (for a VYII) and where you are, and you shall have my eternal gratitude! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

Glenys by the sounds of it you may not need new brake pads if the car stop nicely.

Only time you need to be concerned is when your brakes start making a grinding noise where the pads have worn down the the metal, then you have problems.

Paul (SilverSV8) is a mechanic and he will no doubt sort it out for you if you go see him on Friday. Top stuff Paul !!

Well, there's somethin' about that car that's warped, and I'm not entirely convinced it's the nut that holds the steering wheel.

I'm assuming that most auto supply shops (Eg, Repco etc) sell brake pads?

Bad news Glenys , because your VY Commodore , is a " RED " one you will have to pay a little more for the brake pads ! , you are reading this & thinking , why oh why do I have to pay more ? good question !!! because the RED ones go faster ! Zooooooooooom , you wheel spiner you !! .

Hope you & SLIVERV8 get it all sorted out , bloody good man he is !!!

Thanks Silver, but I bought some today at Robbo's. They gave me mates rates. I got the Ferrodo ones. Hope they're ok.

Well Wazza, now that I can stop properly, I'd like to see how fast the beastie can go. Shame they took away the no speed limits in the NT. :(

Chequers,

Has your problem been fixed now? Was it as diagnosed by the learned members of the forum? And did you avoid crashing anyway?
