View Full Version : Car bra, or polyurethane?

My car has developed a huge amount of stone chips in the bumper bar recently. It's the worst colour to try and touch up, so my panel beater suggested a car bra. I was looking for some, and found a couple of places who do a polyurethane coating on the car. Does anyone know whether it's any good or not? It sounds pretty good, and would look a lot better than a car bra. Probably more comfortable for the car too.... lol. One place can practically cover the whole car, or they can just do particular panels.

For roadtrips, for sure. Though I'd be wary of using a car bra on a permanent basis. Surely dust will gather underneath it over time, scratching the bejeebers out of your paintwork(?).

I have no idea regarding the Polyurethane coating though. I haven't heard of that before.

Maybe our car detailing sponsors could shed some light on a better way. :)

I've got some car wrap I'm not using....or ever intend to use again.

All yours and I'll pay ya $10.00 to take it. LOL

Hi, the poly is a good idea it is great stuff very expensive to have done but only do the parts you need to do.You can also buy the do it yourself stick on one but it is also expensive but is great if you have a misfortune at the front of the car because it easy for the panel beater to replace rather than having the poly resprayed on.

Go the car bra, easy on, easy off, less hassle than that poly stuff.
Car bra $440 delivered to your front door.
At the end of the day it's your choice Glenys.
Goodluck with the decision, let us know how you go.
Cheers.
Nick. :D

I used this stuff called Cardom for the trip back from Melbourne after Roxanne was painted. You paint it on with a roller and it dries to a film using the static cling method for adhesion. Takes a while to put on but does a good job. Lasts for about six months before it biodegrades. Can be a bugger to get off if you put it on too thin though!

Seems there are pros and cons to both. The car bras are coloured now, but still very obvious. And I don't like the look of them, which means it would be put on, and taken off a lot. Not easy when you're in a hurry!
There's a place in Artarmon (North Sydney) that does the polyurethane. The cost depends on what areas you want done. They do anything from just the bumper bar, to nearly the whole car. It lasts a lifetime. Hmmmm. Meh, I have plenty of time to think about it. :)

I've seen the poly stuff after it was put on the front end of a vehicle-It was noticeable but not too bad i spose, but compared to wearing a wuss bag set of chicks undies on z front of ur beast i'd say go for the poly if can...Over the years my shop just used to either 1:Touchup chips (perfect color matched paint but) let it dry then wet rub n cut it=used to get rida bout 80-90% imperfections or 2:quickly wet/dry rub the front bar-mask the bar of itself then repaint it cus all bars these days r plastic compared to guards n bonnet being metal so u dont have blend out anywhere, just z bar- then touchup bonnet chips if any...used to do a bar repaint, n have it back to client in bout 3-4 hours n charge em 200-400 depending on who or what job was, lol...
