Alpine with iPod control. Love it. Previously had a 2 JVC's. No problems with them either. One of them is now in my bug.

Pioneer, best bang for your buck head unit. My last one has Bluetooth,USB,Ipod, you could plug a laptop into it if that was your thing, 5 volt output 3 rca. all for $300 new.

I guess at the end of the day its up to you, if you just want to listen to the radio and play a few cd's, buy something basic from super cheap for $100

im no expert on stereo systems, but i dont think a headunit is gonna have much affect on a sub. It all comes down to the quality and power of the amps you will be using. Im sure somebody will correct me if im wrong?

One of the reason's I chose the alpine for my car was the fact that it has separate line out for a sub and subwoofer level control in the head unit. My subs need a bigger amp but still sound nice. It's good to be able to adjust the level of the subs on the fly depending on the type of music being listened to. I'm also able to adjust the crossover point of the high pass filter as well. This helps with which frequencies get sent to the front speakers. This has eliminated the shaking rear view mirrors on the doors.

Can't say the same for the one in the cabin :)
