Hi,
this relates to a previous post, but I think is worth starting a new topic.

In the existing "stereo" topic started by Tigerv8, I indicated my disappointment with the so called "premium" sound system in my Calais V. BlackOne suggested the option of replacing the standard speakers with another high quality brand such as Focal.

I then rang 8 different car audio specialists. Its surprising how little they seem to know about these systems.

I also asked as question on an another forum where I got some good info! Someone mentioned the "gain" control adjustment that exists on the Amp that is in the boot of the VE Calais V and SS V.

The Amp is apparently for the Sub woofers only and if you adjust it too high it can cause distortion or rear shelf vibration. I adjusted mine from the standard "half-way" mark up to about the 5/8 position.

To do this I removed the Amp bracket thatb holds the whole Amp in position. I only did this so I could see and photograph it, but you don't need to do this. You can feel the knob on the bottom edge of the Amp. Just turn it clockwise a small amount. The knob sort of clicks into its orginal "half-way" position, so you can easily return it to this spot if you want to.

Ideally get someone to sit in the car and listen to the difference as you do it.

For anyone who doesn't need a huge high cost system its definitely worth doing. The Base sounds crisper and better to my non-expert ear.

I may also replace the standard speakers as Matt suggested. Not sure but will let you know.

Here are photos of where I found it and how I adjusted it:

Good post Howard. There are a lot of audio place out there that have not had much experience with the VE's.

One place that I do know of which is very good and I have used myself a number of times in the past, is Cronulla Car Sound at Kirrawee. Speak to the Owen, he is the owner and his knowledge is excellent even when it comes to the VE's.

The Focal speakers I mentioned Howard are high quality speakers but not with the price tag you'd expect. I replaced all my speakers in my previous car (VY) along with a head unit and the audio quality and difference was amazing to say the least.

I have not yet replaced the factory speakers in my VE but it is on my things-to-do list. I want to get my performance mods done first before I tackle the audio.

Again good post Howard.

Cheers....
